A thermostat is a low-voltage switch with a temperature sensor and a schedule. Swapping one is simple when the wiring behind it supports the thermostat you picked. Often it does not. We install smart thermostats, standard programmables and plain non-programmable models, and on every one of them the first thing we read is the equipment, not the old thermostat.
The visit includes labeling the existing conductors, confirming at the air handler or boiler what each wire truly connects to, mounting and configuring the new unit, pairing a smart model to your Wi-Fi, and running every stage of heat and cool to prove it works. If your wiring will not support the thermostat you want, you hear that before the old one comes off the wall.

That last one matters more than it looks. Mechanical thermostats have a wide swing designed into them, often two or three degrees either side of the setpoint, so the house is rarely at the temperature on the dial. And the Wi-Fi dropouts almost never trace back to your router.
Most smart thermostats need a C wire, the common conductor that supplies continuous 24-volt power. A lot of housing stock across New Hampshire, southern Maine and northern New Jersey was wired with four conductors or fewer, because thermostats of that era ran on batteries or stole a trickle of current through the heating circuit. Forced to power-steal, a smart thermostat will brown out, reboot, drop its network and sometimes chatter the furnace relay. Two fixes work: pull a new cable, or fit an add-a-wire adapter at the control board that turns your existing conductors into a powered circuit.
Voltage matters just as much. Electric baseboard and wall heaters switch 120 or 240 volts through line-voltage thermostats. Wiring a low-voltage smart thermostat to one destroys it in seconds. Older gas wall furnaces and some standing-pilot boilers run a millivolt circuit that most smart thermostats cannot switch. Both have solutions, usually a line-voltage smart model or an isolation relay. Neither is the box on the shelf at the home center.
A heat pump does not use the W terminal the way a furnace does. It has a reversing valve driven by O or B, and getting that backwards gives you cooling on a call for heat. Multi-stage equipment needs each stage mapped and delayed, or it runs on high output constantly and you lose the efficiency you paid for. Dual-fuel setups, a heat pump paired with an oil, propane or gas furnace, need an outdoor sensor and a balance point: the outdoor temperature below which the thermostat locks out the compressor and hands the house to the furnace. Set that point too high and you burn expensive fuel on a mild day. Set it too low and the heat pump grinds away without keeping up.
So we configure to the equipment, then verify by running it. Every stage of heat, every stage of cool, the reversing valve in both modes, the auxiliary heat and the fan. We watch the equipment respond rather than trusting the display.
Setbacks do not behave the same on every system. With a furnace or a boiler you can drop the house ten degrees overnight and pull it back fast, because the burner has far more output than the house needs. A heat pump is sized close to the load. On a cold morning it cannot climb ten degrees alone, so the thermostat calls in electric auxiliary strips to catch up, and those strips cost roughly three times what the compressor costs to run. Your overnight savings vanish into the recovery. Hold heat pump setbacks to a couple of degrees, or use a thermostat with smart recovery that starts the climb early and stays off the strips.
Zoned homes add a layer. Each zone needs its own thermostat, and on a hydronic system the C-wire adapter belongs at the zone valve, not at the boiler. Mixing thermostat types across zones on one system sets zones fighting each other for the same burner.
Some thermostat calls really are a twenty-minute swap. Others turn out to be a chafed wire in a joist bay, a failed control board, or equipment that was never configured correctly. Do I need a C wire to install a smart thermostat?
Nearly all of them need continuous 24-volt power, and the C wire is how they get it. If your thermostat cable has only four conductors, you do not have one connected. That is common in older homes here.
You do not have to rewire the house to solve it. We either run a new cable to the thermostat location or fit an add-a-wire adapter at the equipment control board, which uses your existing conductors to deliver constant power. We check which is practical before quoting the job.
