Jaffrey sits in southwestern Cheshire County at the base of Mount Monadnock, whose 3,165-foot summit stands nearly a thousand feet above any other peak within thirty miles. The town averages roughly 1,083 feet of elevation across its forty square miles and holds two distinct villages: Jaffrey Center around the 1775 Meetinghouse, and the downtown village on the Contoocook River where US Route 202 meets NH Routes 124 and 137. Contoocook Lake on the Rindge line is the head of the Contoocook River, so the water here starts in town rather than arriving from upstream. The downtown village grew along the Contoocook where John Boorland put saw and grist mills in 1770, a woolen mill followed in 1814, the Cheshire Mill went up in 1823 with worker housing behind it, and the White Brothers Mill ran woolen, rayon and denim cloth from 1871. Those mill buildings north of the Main Street bridge are apartments now, and the surrounding streets are full of nineteenth-century worker housing. That means layered plumbing: galvanized supply that has closed up with corrosion, waste lines added a century after the house was framed, and water runs in uninsulated exterior walls and shallow crawl spaces that freeze on a January night at this elevation.
