What a home charging install actually is

Every EV ships with a cord that plugs into an ordinary 120-volt outlet. That is Level 1, and it returns roughly three to five miles of range an hour. Left alone overnight it gives you about 40 miles back. If you drive twenty miles a day and park in a garage, that is genuinely enough, and you can stop reading here.

Level 2 runs at 240 volts, the same as your dryer or range, on its own dedicated circuit back to the panel. A 32-amp unit returns something like 25 miles an hour. A 48-amp unit gets closer to 40, which means an empty battery is full by morning no matter what you did the day before. What people underestimate is where the work sits. The charger you hang on the wall is the simple part. The circuit feeding it is the job.

When Level 1 stops keeping up

Nobody works this out on paper. You notice it during a week when the car never quite catches back up.

  • You leave in the morning with less range than you had the morning before
  • Winter arrives and the same commute eats half again as much battery
  • You are planning your week around a public charger
  • A second EV lands in the driveway and one 120-volt outlet is now feeding both
  • The extension cord running out the garage door has quietly become permanent

There is one more sign, and it is the serious one. A Level 1 cord pulls around 12 amps for ten hours straight, which is far more than a general-purpose receptacle was designed to do night after night for years. A warm plug or a browned faceplate on the outlet you charge from means that circuit has had enough. Shut it off and stop using it.

Your panel decides most of this

The first question is never which charger to buy. It is whether your service has room for one. Charging counts as a continuous load, so code requires the circuit be sized at 125 percent of what the unit will actually draw. A 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp breaker and conductors to match. That is a large block of capacity to find in a house already running an electric range, a well pump and maybe a heat pump.

So we run a real load calculation instead of eyeballing the panel and guessing. Where the numbers come out tight, code also lets us use twelve months of metered demand data from your utility plus a safety margin, and that frequently shows a house drawing far less than its nameplate suggests. A lot of 100-amp services pass that way.

When one does not pass, a full service upgrade is not the only path forward. A load management system watches the incoming service with current sensors and throttles or pauses the car whenever the rest of the house peaks. Your car is charging at two in the morning anyway, when nothing else is running. It is recognized by code, it costs a fraction of a service upgrade, and it is the right answer more often than homeowners expect.

Hardwired or plug-in, and what moves the price

A plug-in charger on a 14-50 receptacle is the familiar setup, and it caps you at 40 amps of continuous draw. It also puts a receptacle in the circuit, and receptacles in garages and outdoors now require a GFCI breaker. Your charger already has ground-fault detection built into it. Two protective devices watching the same current is the classic recipe for a breaker that trips at three in the morning for no reason and a car that is empty at seven.

Hardwiring skips the receptacle and the external GFCI breaker both, and it is the only way to run above 40 amps. What you give up is portability, which almost nobody uses twice. We install either one. We will tell you which your situation actually calls for.

Cost tracks the electrical work, not the equipment. Distance from panel to parking spot. Whether that run crosses open basement joists or has to be fished through finished walls. Whether the panel has two adjacent full slots free. Whether it is one of the obsolete panels that no longer has a listed breaker made for it, in which case nothing new should be added to it at all.

Garages, driveways and this climate

An attached garage is the easy case. Detached is where budgets move, because that needs a buried feeder, its own subpanel and a disconnect at the structure. In granite country the trench can hit ledge less than two feet down and change the entire plan, so we look at that before quoting rather than during.

Outdoor mounting works fine here, provided the unit is rated for it and mounted by someone who has seen a New Hampshire February. That means a NEMA 4 rated enclosure, the head set high enough to clear a plowed snowbank, and the holster angled down so it cannot fill with meltwater and freeze into an ice cup. Charging cables also stiffen badly below freezing, so we leave the cord a route it can take when it is cold and rigid, not only when it is warm and limp.

On the Jersey Shore, salt air is what ends outdoor equipment. Stainless hardware, sealed penetrations, and a unit rated for wet locations rather than merely covered. Cold cuts both ways too. Winter range loss is exactly when a slow charger hurts most, and a car left on the wall overnight warms its battery from your house instead of from the pack you need to get to work.
