An engine that spends its life switched off

A standby unit sits outdoors doing nothing for months, which is harder on it than running. Oil settles in a cold sump. Rubber dries. Battery plates sulfate. Mice move into the enclosure in October and chew the wiring harness by February. None of it is visible from the driveway, and the controller shows a green ready light right up until the night it is asked to work.

Nine times out of ten it is the battery

Ask anyone who services these units why one failed to start and the answer is almost always the same. A home standby cranks off a single 12-volt battery that typically gives two to three good years, and less than that through New England winters. Sitting at partial charge builds sulfate on the plates, so capacity drops long before voltage looks wrong on a meter.

The quieter version is a failed charger inside the controller. The battery discharges over months while the unit reports itself ready, and the weekly self-test is the very thing finishing it off. Behind battery trouble, the usual suspects are a low oil pressure or overspeed fault the unit latched weeks ago and nobody cleared, a fuel valve closed during unrelated work and never reopened, and corroded terminals.

Run hours set the schedule, not the calendar

Most air-cooled home standby engines want oil and filter at roughly 200 run hours or every two years, whichever lands first. That second number is the one that misleads people here. A four-day December outage puts close to a hundred hours on the clock in a single week. Two bad winters and it is well past due while the calendar says otherwise. Read the hours off the controller and service to that number.

Liquid-cooled units add coolant strength, hoses, belt tension and the block heater. A dead block heater is easy to miss and expensive to ignore, because the engine then cold-starts at outdoor temperature and takes longer to pick up load. Cold starts do more wear than anything else these machines experience.

Propane and diesel fail in different ways

Rural New Hampshire and southern Maine have no gas main, so most home units here run on propane. Propane does not go stale in storage. What it does is stop vaporizing fast enough in deep cold when the tank is low, because liquid propane needs warm surface area to boil off. A tank at twenty percent on a subzero morning can still feed a furnace and starve a generator stepping to full load. Keep it above half through winter and have line sizing and regulator capacity confirmed, since an undersized run shows up as a unit that starts, transfers, then dies.

Diesel is the reverse problem. The engine is rarely the issue, the fuel is. Stored diesel starts going unstable inside six to twelve months, tanks breathe and collect condensation, and microbial growth at the water line plugs filters. Water gets drained off the separator, fuel gets tested and polished, and the tank stays full to leave less room for condensation.

The weekly self-test proves less than you think

Nearly every unit runs an automatic exercise cycle, weekly or every other week. Keep it on. It circulates oil, works the charger and burns moisture out of the crankcase. But understand what it is: a short unloaded run while your house is still on utility power. It proves the engine starts. It says nothing about whether the transfer switch will throw, or whether it holds voltage when a well pump, a furnace and two refrigerators restart at once.

That transfer switch is the component most often skipped and the one that leaves you dark with a generator humming happily in the yard. Contacts pit from arcing, control wiring works loose, and coastal salt gets into the cabinet. Testing it properly means killing utility power at the switch and watching the whole sequence: sense, crank, transfer, carry load, retransfer, cool down, shut off. Diesel owners need a periodic load test too, since low-load running packs unburned fuel and carbon into the exhaust.

Book it in the fall, not during the outage

Ice storms across New Hampshire land in December. Nor'easters and hurricane remnants hit the Jersey Shore from late summer on. Neither leaves room to sort out a bad battery. Coastal air adds its own tax: salt corrodes the enclosure, hinges and the transfer switch cabinet. Where the water table is high, a unit set low on its pad rots from the base rail up.
