Modern cold-climate heat pumps have changed what is possible in New Hampshire. The same equipment reverses in summer to handle the mugginess that rolls in off Great Bay and the river valleys, where July and August turn genuinely humid. This is the single most important plumbing fact in New Hampshire. The same granite bedrock the state is named for gives NH some of the highest naturally occurring arsenic, radon, and uranium in private well water anywhere in the nation. USGS work estimates roughly one in five private wells exceeds the federal arsenic limit, and the state carries the country's highest bladder-cancer rate, tied in part to arsenic in well water. Many bedrock wells also carry high radon, plus manganese and heavy hardness that stain fixtures and wreck water heaters. None of it changes the taste, so you cannot know without a test. We test private wells for what is actually in them and build the treatment - arsenic removal, radon aeration, softening, filtration - that the results call for.
Mud season, snowmelt & wet basements
When the deep snowpack lets go in March and April, New Hampshire's mud season sends the water table climbing fast, and low-lying homes near the Merrimack, the Piscataqua, and the state's countless lakes and wetlands feel it first. Meltwater and spring rain pile up faster than saturated ground can shed them, and basements that stayed dry all winter start seeping. A wet basement is not just a nuisance; it rots framing, ruins finished space, and feeds the mold that humid summers finish off. We keep basements dry with properly pitched drainage, a correctly sized sump pump, and a battery or water-powered backup so the pump still runs during the exact storm that knocks the power out. Getting the water out is cheaper than repairing what it ruins.

New Hampshire's housing runs old, and a lot of it still carries the wiring it was built with. We regularly open panels to find 60- or 100-amp fuse boxes, cloth-insulated knob-and-tube runs from before 1950, and services never meant to feed a modern home. That was fine for a few lights and a radio; it is badly overmatched by heat pumps, EV chargers, well pumps, and everything else a family plugs in today. Overloaded, aged wiring is a genuine fire risk, and many NH insurers now require knob-and-tube replacement before they will write a policy. Nor'easters and heavy wet snow bring the same threat every year, and long tree-lined rural lines mean the power that goes out here can stay out for days. When the grid drops in January, a home without power is a home without heat, without a well pump, and without a working sump.
