Rindge covers about 40 square miles of southeastern Cheshire County, sitting right on the Massachusetts line across from Winchendon and Ashburnham. The town center stands at 1,316 feet and the ground climbs to 1,505 feet on the lower slopes of Pratt Mountain at the eastern border, where Cathedral of the Pines looks north toward Monadnock. Rindge calls itself the town of many lakes and earns it - Contoocook Lake, Lake Monomonac, Pool Pond, Pearly Pond next to Franklin Pierce University, and Hubbard, Grassy and Emerson among the rest - and it sits on the divide where the Contoocook River begins its run north to the Merrimack. Rindge averages around 66 inches of snow a year, and the height of land here holds cold longer than it lasts down over the line in Winchendon. Design lows in this part of New Hampshire run to twenty below on the worst nights, and that is exactly the night an undersized boiler or a furnace running on borrowed time gives out.
