What a heat pump actually does

One machine, both jobs. In summer it pulls heat out of the house. In winter it runs the same cycle backward and pulls heat out of the outdoor air, because air at 10 degrees still holds usable energy. Nothing burns. The unit moves heat rather than making it, which is why a good one delivers two to three units of heat for every unit of electricity it draws.

We work on all three common forms: ducted systems that use existing ductwork and an air handler, ductless mini-splits with wall or ceiling heads serving individual rooms, and dual-fuel setups where a heat pump carries the mild months and an existing oil or propane furnace or boiler takes the coldest nights. Repairs run from refrigerant leaks and failed reversing valves to defrost boards, inverter faults, and outdoor units that never came back from a hard winter.

Signs the system needs attention

Heat pump failures are quieter than furnace failures. The house does not go cold all at once. It goes lukewarm while the bill climbs, because backup heat quietly took over the load.

  • Supply air feels cool even with the system running. Heat pump air is cooler than furnace air by design, but it should still feel warm on your hand.
  • Aux heat or Em heat showing on the thermostat when it is not brutally cold outside.
  • The outdoor unit encased in ice, or a sheet of ice building underneath it.
  • Defrost cycles that repeat every few minutes instead of roughly once an hour.
  • Rooms that hold temperature fine in October and lose ground in January.
  • An electric bill that jumped in a month the weather did not justify.

Steam rolling off the outdoor unit for a few minutes is normal defrost, not a fault. Steam plus a puddle that refreezes into a skating rink is a drainage problem worth a call.

How we approach the work

Diagnostics start with what the equipment is actually producing: refrigerant pressures and superheat measured against the outdoor temperature, compressor amp draw, the temperature split between supply and return air, and what the thermostat is telling the backup heat to do. Plenty of weak heat pump calls end at the thermostat rather than the equipment, because factory lockout settings get left alone and the electric strips fire at 40 degrees on a unit built to work at 5.

On a replacement we run a load calculation before quoting a size, and we read rated capacity at 5 and 17 degrees instead of the 47-degree headline number, since 47 degrees is not the design condition anywhere in our footprint. What drives the right choice and the price

Heat loss drives everything. A tight ranch and a drafty 1890 farmhouse of the same square footage need different machines, and no square-foot rule of thumb catches that difference. Oversizing hurts more here than it does with a furnace, because the same equipment is your air conditioner in July, and an oversized unit short-cycles and leaves the house cold and clammy.

After sizing, the cost drivers are structural. Usable ductwork decides ducted versus ductless. Zone count decides how many indoor heads and how far the lines run. Electrical service matters more than people expect, since electric backup strips can add serious load to a 100-amp panel that is already full. Keeping the oil or propane system as backup usually costs less than tearing it out, and it hedges you against a cold snap arriving alongside a high electric rate.

What our weather does to these systems

Below roughly 40 degrees the outdoor coil frosts, and the unit reverses itself briefly to melt it clear. That is designed behavior. Sitting in a snowbank or under a roof line that dumps a drift on it is not, so we mount outdoor units on stands or wall brackets above normal snow depth, with meltwater somewhere to go.

Fuel math matters across northern New England and the parts of New Jersey with no gas main. Through most of the heating season a cold-climate unit beats oil and propane per unit of delivered heat. During the coldest stretch of January, when efficiency drops and fuel is doing its best work, that ranking can flip. Dual fuel exists for exactly that reason, and the switchover point is a setting we tune, not a coin flip.

Salt air is the problem on the Jersey Shore. It eats aluminum fins and steel cabinets from the outside in, so a coastal outdoor unit wants coated coils and a routine fresh-water rinse to reach the age it was built for.
