Pompton Lakes sits in southeastern Passaic County at one of the busiest water crossings in northern New Jersey, where the Ramapo River flows south through Pompton Lake, drops over Pompton Falls, and joins the Wanaque and Pompton Rivers just below town. It is a dense, older borough, the first one incorporated in Passaic County back in 1895, and its housing runs from tight streets of century-old homes near the lake to postwar neighborhoods up on higher ground. The bigger issue in an old borough is the plumbing itself. Many of the homes near the lake still run on decades-old galvanized supply lines that corrode from the inside, drop your water pressure, and rust the water at the tap. We test what is actually coming out of your pipes, add the softening or filtration the results call for, and replace failing galvanized lines with copper or PEX so your pressure and your water quality come back.

One-third of the borough sits in the flood zone

Flooding is the defining fact of property in Pompton Lakes. Roughly a third of the borough lies in the FEMA flood zone, and the confluence of the Ramapo, Wanaque, and Pompton Rivers means water from a whole watershed backs up here in a big storm. Hurricane Irene set the record in 2011 at more than 22 feet on the Ramapo gauge, and the April 1984 flood is still remembered, but it does not take a named storm to put water in a low-lying basement. A sump pump is the front line, and a sump with no backup fails on its one big test, because the water peaks during the same storm that knocks the power out.
