What an alarm job actually covers

Alarms in a house are a small network, not a set of separate gadgets. Three things decide whether that network protects anyone: where each unit sits, how it gets power, and whether the units talk to each other. Interconnected alarms all sound when one detects smoke, so a fire that starts in the basement wakes the person asleep on the second floor. Nothing else on the list saves as many people.

The work covers hardwired units with sealed battery backup, wireless-interconnect models for finished homes where fishing new cable would mean opening ceilings, and combination smoke and carbon monoxide devices anywhere a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage is in play. It also covers relocating alarms that are in the wrong place, which is the most common defect we find in houses that otherwise look fully protected.

When to replace instead of troubleshoot

The detector itself expires. Sensing chambers drift as they age, and every listed alarm carries a manufacture date printed on the back of the housing. Ten years past that date the unit is finished, regardless of how fresh the battery is or how loudly it answers the test button. That button confirms the horn and the circuit board. It proves nothing about whether the sensor can still see smoke.

  • One unit sounding while the rest of the house stays quiet
  • Alarms in the hallway but none inside the bedrooms
  • A chirp that travels from unit to unit, which usually means a loose neutral on the interconnect
  • Alarms that trip every time someone showers or broils

What the visit looks like

An electrician walks the whole house first, counts devices, reads dates off the backs, and maps them against where alarms are actually required: inside every bedroom, within ten feet of each separate sleeping area, on every level including the basement, and at the top of each stairway. We then trigger one alarm and confirm the others answer, which is the only real test of an interconnect.

Replacement is rarely a straight swap. Manufacturers use incompatible interconnect signaling, so mixing brands on one loop silently breaks it. If we replace one hardwired unit, we replace the whole loop with a single brand. We also check the alarms are off the dead-air space in ceiling corners, at least three feet from supply registers and ceiling fans, and far enough from the range and the bathroom door to stop the false trips that make people pull batteries.

What drives the right choice

Sensing type matters more than most homeowners are told. Ionization sensing reacts fastest to fast flaming fires with small particles. Photoelectric sensing reacts fastest to smoldering fires with large particles, and smoldering is what a couch, a mattress or an overheating connection in a wall cavity does for a long time before it flames. Because smoldering smoke kills sleeping people, photoelectric or dual-sensor units are what we put in. Photoelectric also nuisance-trips less near kitchens and baths.

Power depends on the age of the house. Homes wired to modern code have hardwired, interconnected alarms with battery backup, and code expects that arrangement to stay when you renovate. Older housing across the footprint often has single-station battery units only. In New Jersey, homes built before 1977 need ten-year sealed battery alarms, and any one or two family dwelling requires a smoke alarm compliance certificate before a sale, lease or change of occupancy.

Why carbon monoxide is not optional here

Much of rural New Hampshire and southern Maine has no gas main, so heat comes from oil-fired boilers, propane furnaces and wood stoves. Every one of those produces carbon monoxide when combustion goes wrong: a cracked heat exchanger, a flue blocked by a nest, a chimney capped by freezing rain, or a downdraft in a tight house with a running bath fan. Long winters mean thousands more hours of combustion than a mild climate ever sees.

December ice storms add the sharper risk. Portable generators run for days, and a generator too near a door, window or garage can fill a house with carbon monoxide faster than anyone wakes up. On the Jersey Shore, damp basements and salt-laden humid air foul sensing chambers earlier, which shortens the useful life of alarms mounted low in the house. Note that a CO sensor has its own service life, commonly seven to ten years, so a combination unit dies on whichever clock runs out first.
