Old Bridge sits on the Raritan Bayshore in eastern Middlesex County, a forty-two-square-mile township that runs from the tidal waterfront at Laurence Harbor down past the wooded edges of Cheesequake State Park and out to the neighborhoods along the South River on its western side. Storms push Raritan Bay against the Laurence Harbor shoreline - Sandy flooded the waterfront and forced evacuations there in 2012 - and Route 35 through the harbor still takes on water at high tide in a strong blow. On the western side, the South River carries storm surge upstream, and the low streets of South Old Bridge along River Road and Old Matawan Road were evacuated in that same storm.
