Two layers, and you want both

A whole-home surge protective device mounts at your main panel and takes the hit first. It watches the voltage between the incoming legs, the neutral and ground, and when that voltage climbs past a set threshold it becomes a low-resistance path and dumps the excess into the grounding system. The large transient never reaches your branch circuits. What it cannot do is clamp all the way down to the level a circuit board wants to see.

That is the second layer's job. A quality strip or protected receptacle at the equipment catches what gets past the panel and clamps it much tighter. The panel device alone still lets several hundred volts through to sensitive electronics. Strips alone are asked to absorb energy they were never rated for, and they die trying. Run both and each does the work it was designed for.

Lightning is the smaller half of the story

A strike a quarter mile away can induce a spike on the overhead line and send it straight to your service. It happens here, but it is not what wears equipment out. Most surge activity is routine grid behavior. Utilities switch capacitor banks on and off through the day. A recloser out on the pole re-energizes a faulted circuit two or three times before it gives up, and each attempt is a fresh transient. Crews restoring power after an outage push a hard step change down the wire.

Then there is your own house. Every motor that shuts off collapses a magnetic field back into the wiring: the well pump, the septic or sump pump, the air conditioning compressor, the refrigerator. None of these blows anything up on the day. They chip away at your protection and at the power supplies inside your equipment, which is why a board fails on a calm Tuesday with no storm in sight.

When to call us

  • The status light on an existing surge device is dark, red, or beeping - it is spent and passing everything through
  • You have replaced more than one appliance or equipment control board in the last few years
  • LED bulbs and dimmers keep failing early in the same rooms
  • You are already scheduling a panel upgrade, generator, EV charger or heat pump, which is the cheapest hour to add protection
  • You still have two-prong outlets, because your plug-in strips are not doing what you think they are

That last one catches people out. A plug-in strip protects mostly by shunting to ground. On an ungrounded circuit, or behind a three-prong adapter with nothing bonded behind it, the strip's green light can still be on while the path it depends on does not exist.

What the install looks like

We start with the grounding, not the box. Ground rods, the water pipe bond and the intersystem termination all get checked, because a surge device is only as good as the path it dumps into. Then the device goes in on a two-pole breaker, mounted as close to the main as the panel allows, with the leads cut short and run straight. Lead length is not cosmetic. Every extra inch of conductor adds inductance, and inductance raises the voltage that gets through during the microseconds that matter. The same device installed with a coil of slack performs worse than one wired with a few straight inches.

We also look at what else comes into the house. Coax, satellite and phone lines can carry a surge around a panel device if they are grounded to their own rod instead of bonded to the service. Before we leave we energize, confirm the indicator, and show you where that light is and what it means when the device is used up.

What changes the job across this footprint

Grounding is harder on granite. Shallow bedrock and thin, dry, stony soil across New Hampshire and southern Maine make for high-resistance ground rods, and a second electrode is often the honest fix. Rural services tend to be long overhead drops running through trees, which pick up far more induced energy than a short underground lateral. December ice storms take those lines down for days, and restoration is never gentle. On the Jersey Shore, salt air corrodes outdoor connections, and a corroded ground connection is a compromised ground connection.

The panel drives price more than the device. Protection needs two adjacent breaker spaces, and a full panel means shuffling circuits or adding a subpanel. Older homes sometimes carry a panel no responsible electrician adds a breaker to, and that becomes a service replacement. The National Electrical Code has required surge protection on dwelling services since its 2020 edition, including when service equipment is replaced, so a panel upgrade already carries it.
