$2,450 to $4,400
The middle half of the 26 water heater installations we completed in Brick, as of October 2026. A quarter came in under $2,450 and a quarter ran above $4,400.
That is our own job history in Brick Township, NJ, not a national average and not a teaser price. It excludes sales tax. We publish it because you cannot plan around "call for pricing," and because a number we have to stand behind keeps us honest. Your quote is fixed before any work starts, and what moves it is covered below.
Most of the country replaces a water heater where the old one stood. In the Brick flood zones that is not automatic. Mechanical equipment in a flood hazard area is expected to be elevated above the base flood elevation or otherwise protected, and a replacement is the moment the township looks at it. A good many homes here have already been raised or had equipment moved up after Sandy; plenty have not.
This matters to your price before any equipment is chosen. Elevating a tank can mean a platform, re-running gas and water, extending the vent and moving the drain. It is also the single most common reason a cheap phone quote turns into a different number on the day, because the quote was given for a swap and the job is not a swap.
We check the flood zone and what the existing installation looks like before we price. If your heater can be replaced where it stands, you are at the lower end of our Brick range. If it has to come up, you are nearer the top.
Within a few miles of the water, the air is doing slow damage. On water heaters it shows up on the draft hood, the vent connector and the burner assembly, and on power-vented units it attacks the fan housing. If you are replacing a heater that failed early, this is often the reason, and it is worth choosing the venting arrangement with that in mind rather than copying what was there.
A conventional tank is the lower-cost answer and suits most Brick homes. Tankless makes sense where you are out of space, where the household genuinely runs out of hot water, or where the house is already set up for it. It needs a larger gas supply and a dedicated vent, so retrofitting one into a house plumbed for a 40-gallon tank is a bigger job than the equipment price suggests.
In a flood zone, tankless has a real secondary advantage: a wall-hung unit is far easier to mount above the flood elevation than a 50-gallon tank on a platform. That is a genuine argument for it here that does not apply inland.
Most of Brick is served by New Jersey Natural Gas for gas and JCP&L for electric, and both run programmes worth knowing about before you buy. We have written them up: NJNG SaveGreen rebates and financing and JCP&L financing through NEIF. There is also a guide to the zero percent utility financing options in New Jersey.
On the federal side, the 25C tax credit expired at the end of 2025, so there is no federal credit on 2026 equipment. We cover what that changed in this article.
A straight tank swap is a half day; an elevation or a tankless conversion is usually a full day. We shut off and drain, remove the old unit, build the platform if one is needed, set and secure the new heater, make the gas and water connections, fit the expansion tank and pan, run or extend the vent, then fill, purge the air, light off and check draft. The permit is pulled and closed out with the township. You are without hot water for a few hours, not overnight.
