What furnace install costs in Bedford, NH

$6,600 to $8,900

The middle half of the 209 furnace replacements we completed across New Hampshire and New Jersey, as of October 2026. A quarter came in under $6,600 and a quarter ran above $8,900.

That is our own completed work across New Hampshire and New Jersey, not a national average and not a teaser price. We price the same way in every town we cover, so this is the range to plan around in Bedford, NH too. Where we have done enough of a particular job in a single town to publish that town's own number, we do, and we say so. Here the honest answer is the wider sample. It excludes sales tax, your quote is fixed before any work starts, and what moves it is covered below.

Furnace Replacement in Bedford: what to expect

Bedford is larger houses on fuels the gas main never reached, and that changes this job more than most people expect. The sections below cover what the work involves, what sets your price, and the local conditions we plan around here specifically. The range above is our own completed work across New Hampshire and New Jersey rather than a Bedford-only figure, because we price the same way everywhere we go.

What Bedford houses are actually like

Bedford is the clearest fuel story in our New Hampshire footprint. Across roughly 2,000 jobs, oil and propane together outnumber natural gas by more than ten to one. The main simply does not reach most of the town, and that single fact shapes every heating decision here.

The houses are also larger than our Manchester stock and more often zoned across floors or wings, frequently with a substantial domestic hot water load on the same system. Private wells are common. The practical consequence is that equipment sizing and zoning matter more here than almost anywhere we work, and that the efficiency premium on a condensing appliance pays back faster, because propane and oil cost more per unit of heat than gas does.

Sizing starts with heat loss, not the old nameplate

The most common thing we find on a replacement is an oversized furnace. A house that needed 120,000 BTU decades ago has usually had insulation, windows or a roof done since and needs a good deal less. An oversized furnace short-cycles: it heats the air around the thermostat quickly, shuts off, and leaves the far end of the house behind. That is why the complaint is almost always one cold room rather than a cold house.

We run a room-by-room heat loss calculation before quoting. It takes longer than reading the old label and it is the single biggest difference between a furnace that solves the problem and one that reproduces it with newer equipment.

Venting is where cheap quotes go wrong

A condensing furnace vents in PVC out a sidewall rather than up the chimney. That is usually an improvement, but if your water heater was sharing that chimney it is now orphaned in a flue far too large for it, which causes poor draft and condensation. Relining is the fix and it is the most frequently omitted line on an underpriced quote. Ask for it in writing either way.

Combustion air is the other one. A house that has been air-sealed since the original installation often no longer gives the appliance enough air to burn safely, and code is specific about it.

What moves the price

  • Efficiency. A condensing furnace costs more up front and vents differently. On a house you are keeping for a decade it usually pays back; on one being sold in two years it often does not.
  • Venting and chimney. Sidewall venting, plus relining if a water heater is orphaned on the old flue.
  • Ductwork. Undersized returns are the most common fault we find and often the cheapest to put right.
  • Fuel supply. Line sizing, regulators or tank work where the appliance input changes.
  • Combustion air. Required by code and frequently inadequate on the installation being removed.

Rebates, and what changed for 2026

The federal 25C energy-efficiency tax credit expired at the end of 2025, so there is no federal credit on 2026 equipment. That is worth knowing before a salesperson tells you otherwise. New Hampshire incentives run through NHSaves, the joint programme of the state utilities, and the amounts move between programme years. We confirm what is actually live on the day we quote rather than printing a figure here that is stale by the time you read it.

How replacement day runs

A single working day in most cases. We protect the route in, remove the old unit, set and level the new one, make the fuel connection, run the venting, wire the control and start up. Before anyone leaves we check manifold pressure, temperature rise across the heat exchanger and static pressure in the ducts, and you get the readings. The permit is pulled and closed out.
